Acupuncture is a form of therapy in which fine, sterile needles are inserted into specific parts of the body.
Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of medicine having been used for over 3000 years in China and in the West for over 200 years.
There are several theories as to how the effects are produced.
The traditional Chinese view is that Qi (pronounced: Chi) energy flows freely through the body in channels, or meridians, when it is in a healthy state. Illness or injury may block these channels and energy stagnates.
The stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points frees this stagnation and helps the body to return to its normal state of health.
More recently research has shown that acupuncture stimulates the body to produce natural pain and stress-relieving chemicals such as endorphins, oxytocin, melatonin and serotonin. These help alleviate discomfort, promote a sense of wellbeing and can also enhance sleep.
Acupuncture increases circulation to the injured or painful area which can stimulate healing.
Muscle spasm, tightness and / or tenderness can also be reduced in the area around the needle.
Acupuncture stimulates nerve fibres to block out pain signals.
Acupuncture has been recommended by NICE guidelines for the treatment of some chronic pain conditions.
Acupuncture is usually used alongside other physiotherapy techniques to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation, helping you to feel empowered to be able to take an active approach to improving your quality of life.
Written consent for the treatment will be taken after a series of safety precaution questions and it is only used with those who are comfortable with it.
